Human Rights & Indian Institutions

India has established several institutions to protect and promote human rights. The most important is the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), set up under the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993. It investigates complaints of human rights violations and makes recommendations to the government.
At the state level, State Human Rights Commissions (SHRCs) perform similar functions. Other important bodies include the National Commission for Women, National Commission for Minorities, and National Commission for Scheduled Castes, which work to protect vulnerable groups.
The Supreme Court of India and High Courts act as the ultimate guardians of human rights through judicial review and the power to issue writs.
India is also a signatory to several international human rights treaties, reflecting its commitment to global human rights standards.
